Tayo Singerr is new kid on block at Portsmouth as recent footage emerges

Portsmouth Under-18s made the most of their chance and returned to winning ways over the weekend against Newport County.

Tayo Singerr struck a brace in the 2-0 win in South Wales (22 March), ending a run of three straight defeats that had left lead U18 coach Sam Hudson tearing his hair out.

Singerr has been a star performer in the youthful Portsmouth side this season, taking all his progress in his stride and starting to gain the plaudits of several outside the youth development sphere – namely eager supporters who want to see the next local lad sprout through into John Mousinho’s first-team fold.

Singerr bags brace in Portsmouth Academy victory

One thing Mousinho could at least look at from Portsmouth Academy’s weekend win is an inspiration on how to take all three points on your travels.

Pompey are 14th in a 19-team southern section of the Youth Alliance League, with several games in hand on many of the sides above them.

Singerr was set up by the impressive Nathaniel Chioma and latest prodigy Luke Staight for a first-half double which will no doubt further strengthen his own senior prospects, having already been named in the matchday squad by Mousinho in the FA Cup at Wycombe Wanderers back in January.

Hudson, speaking to the official Pompey website (23 March), said: “We had a comfortable advantage at the break, with Tayo taking both of his goals extremely well, the second of them coming from our press.

“We had planned out in training how we could improve in that area and the lads took it all on board.

“There were a number of positive outcomes from the game, including the clean sheet.”

Hudson continued as he hailed the return of Beau Mullins from injury after a four-month absence.

The teenage defender recovered to mark his comeback with a 21-minute substitute appearance, tasked with seeing out the victory after replacing Chioma.

“Probably the most pleasing thing was seeing Beau Mullins get his first minutes for around four months after recovering from injury,” the coach admitted.

“It’s a long journey back and he’s applied himself well to that, so it was great to see him come on, although Nathaniel had done a good job in the game in an unfamiliar position.”

As for Singerr, he is considered to be among one of the advanced crop and will be quietly hoping Portsmouth seal Championship survival with a game or two to spare.

It could, after all, bolster his chances of a potential debut or at least more involvement in the matchday squad.

Teammate Harry Clout was handed his bow in the cup tie against Wycombe with a 14-minute cameo, while Michael Ani also made the bench on the night at Adams Park.
