Freddie Potts Portsmouth return ‘all but dismissed’ after latest admission

Portsmouth will be disheartened to see Freddie Potts leave, but that could potentially be on the cards at the end of the season.

John Mousinho has admitted Pompey would like to keep the 21-year-old beyond this season, but what the future holds remains to be seen.

Potts signed a new contract at West Ham United recently, with his loan spell at Fratton Park set to expire next summer.

The Hampshire outfit have heavily relied on the English youngster in their midfield this season as they fight a relegation battle.

Mousinho will want Potts return at Portsmouth in summer transfer window

Mousinho will undoubtedly be delighted to have Potts back among the squad next season, but that may depend on several factors.

Pompey must ensure Championship survival to have a chance of keeping their best players in the coming months.

The Hampshire outfit are four points ahead of 22nd-place Derby County as Fratton Park gets ready to host Blackburn Rovers on Saturday (29 March).

Mousinho will hope Potts helps his team survive relegation and returns for another loan spell.

Potts all but dismisses Fratton Park transfer return

Mousinho has an obvious call to make with Potts at the end of the season, but that decision may be out of the English manager’s hands.

It would make sense for Pompey to push for the 21-year-old’s return on another temporary move from West Ham.

The Englishman has formed an impressive partnership with Andre Dozzell in the Hampshire outfit’s engine room.

Potts has other aspirations, though, away from Portsmouth, which has all but confirmed that he might not want to be at Fratton Park in the coming months.

Speaking on BBC Sounds (27 March), when asked whether there were indications the young midfielder would break into West Ham’s first team next season, he said: “I just think personally I want to do it. I believe I can do it. I’m just focusing on my season with Portsmouth first because I’ve enjoyed every moment here, it’s been a massive step for me, and I’ve loved it.

“I’m going to finish the season off strong here before thinking about pre-season, but I know with this contract that I’ve just signed, there’s belief from West Ham as a club.”

It looks like Potts is already planning for a future away from the Hampshire outfit, and one can’t blame him for doing so.

When called upon, the 21-year-old has given his best for Mousinho’s team and now hopes to make a name in the Premier League.

Graham Potter will be lucky to have someone like the English youngster in his squad for the upcoming campaign, but it remains to be seen whether the Hammers’ head coach guarantees him minutes.

Potts would be welcome back at Fratton Park, and he has already carved a place for himself in Pompey’s engine room.

It will be interesting to see where the young midfielder’s short-term future lies.
