‘Portsmouth have to sign Mikey Moore’ as big Tottenham loan claim emerges

Portsmouth will again be searching for astute summer deals to strengthen their Championship squad on a budget in the coming months.

Provided Pompey do enough to beat the drop back to League One – something considered unimaginable just a couple of weeks ago – they will hopefully have their pursestrings loosened somewhat, given the guaranteed funds for the next 12 months.

While John Mousinho and Rich Hughes will be desperate for the Eisners to give them the green light to ‘splash out’ – in the Blues’ relative terms – they will doubtless also be looking at smart loan arrangements.

Portsmouth have to explore Mikey Moore after what’s been said

Portsmouth could do a lot worse than explore a deal for Tottenham Hotspur teenager Mikey Moore, who could be available for loan next season.

Moore has been one of several Spurs beneficiaries from an injury crisis hauled on Ange Postecoglou this term, in what has been a disastrous domestic year for the Premier League juggernauts.

The 17-year-old England youth international winger has played 18 games in all competitions so far this season and is the youngest player to appear in the Premier League in 2024-25, though his game time in the first team has dwindled slightly due to the return of more senior stars.

Ex-Spurs and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson urged a loan deal to take place, telling Tottenham News (25 March): “There’s an option [to go on loan] for him. How much is he going to be used next year? What type of development is the player going to have? And is it going to hamper his development by not playing every week? Or is the player going to be better sent out on loan, being a part of a first-team squad, playing every week?

“There are different characters. He strikes me as the type of character that would absolutely relish going out on loan, being the main man somewhere, scoring the goals, and coming back after a season on loan.”

Approaches for Moore will fly in given his impact on an ailing Tottenham side this season. To compete with the confidence and ability he has shown at 17 – not to mention an illness absence he has fought back from over the winter months – shows he is already a resilient character, as Robinson suggested.

It’s imperative Portsmouth move for a player like that. We all saw with Abu Kamara at Fratton Park what kind of contribution a young player given weekly football can do, and Moore is an upgrade in terms of natural talent.

Tottenham could make offer to Championship clubs

Moore remains a scholar age, though is already on a professional contract in Postecoglou’s squad.

At times this season, his drive and glimmers of talent have shown up even the likes of Son Heung-min and James Maddison at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – the big hitters, so to speak.

What Tottenham could end up doing is identifying who they’d like to cherry-pick from the Championship and using a season-long loan offer for Moore as a makeweight.

Premier League – youngest players to appear 2024-25Age at first appearance
Mikey Moore – Tottenham17 years, 1 month, 10 days
Chido Obi – Manchester United17 years, 2 months, 18 days
Shaumaira Mheuka – Chelsea17 years, 4 months, 5 days
Ethan Nwaneri – Arsenal17 years, 5 months, 25 days

Spurs plucked Archie Gray from Leeds United in a similar way last summer, with Joe Rodon making a previous loan deal at Elland Road permanent.

Whether there is anyone in the Blues roster that screams out Spurs target is unconvincing, but Portsmouth have to throw their hat in the ring and guarantee Moore adequate action in the side. He would certainly deliver for the Fratton Park crowd.
