David Prutton predicts Millwall v Portsmouth result

Portsmouth took a huge step towards securing their Championship status when they beat Blackburn 1-0 last Saturday.

Josh Murphy’s first-half strike proved enough to get the better of an out-of-form Rovers side and lift Pompey five points clear of the relegation zone.

Derby’s subsequent win over Preston on Wednesday did not help survival chances, but John Mousinho and Pompey have their destiny in their own hands with seven games left to play.

An away trip to 13th-place Millwall, who still have an outside chance of finishing in the playoffs, lies ahead for the Blues this Saturday.

Portsmouth set to draw with Millwall

Last time out against Millwall, Mousinho’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat at Fratton Park in January courtesy of Mihailo Ivanovic’s goal.

Meanwhile, speaking on the latest episode of Sky Sports’ Essential EFL Championship Predictions podcast, [3 April], David Prutton predicted that Portsmouth will draw 1-1 at The Den this time around.

A draw against Millwall would not be a bad result for Portsmouth

Mousinho and Co would take another giant step towards Championship safety if they beat Millwall on Saturday and achieve back-to-back wins in the second tier for the first time since February.

Pompey’s win over Blackburn boosted their survival chances

However, four teams and five points currently sit between Portsmouth and the relegation zone, so earning another point on the board at The Den would be a respectable outcome.

Furthermore, Alex Neil’s men boast a relatively resolute defence as they have conceded 40 goals in the Championship this term, which is just three more than that of fourth-place Sunderland.

Pompey will be intent on beating an inconsistent Millwall outfit who have lost three of their last five games, but a point would also mark a solid result.

Mousinho’s men still have to take on relegation rivals Derby and Hull, so they have key opportunities further down the line to win all three points.

Achieving Championship survival after winning the League One title would be a solid feat for Pompey, who have given themselves a solid chance to do just that.
