Portsmouth new relegation prediction made by supercomputer after Championship drama

Portsmouth have been handed an even tougher challenge in their quest to survive in the Championship after the latest drama.

It was a night full of twists and turns a both ends of the table with late goals and controversial calls, showcasing the level of emotion that only the Championship can provide at this time of year.

However, for Portsmouth, it wasn’t a great night due to several teams below them picking up positive results and closing the gap on them.

John Mousinho’s men are now just three points above the relegation zone as Cardiff City and Derby County both picked up draws, while Stoke City and Luton Town drew against each other to ensure everyone was gaining on Pompey.

Portsmouth are in a difficult situation

Mousinho’s side were certainly impacted by the results on Tuesday night, with the teams around them increasing the pressure.

With only three points now keeping them out of the relegation zone, the Blues are in a position where they can ill-afford any mistakes, which makes life difficult.

The Opta supercomputer still predicts Portsmouth to avoid the drop and finish 17th when all is said and done, with 52 points.

However, the supercomputer also gives an expected table that makes for slightly less positive reading as far as Pompey are concerned.

Mousinho’s side are expected to still avoid the drop, but it would be much closer as that version of the table has them finishing 20th.

Portsmouth fans will likely not care where they finish as long as they retain their status in the second tier of English football, but doing so in the most comfortable way possible would be key for them.

Portsmouth could ease the pressure on themselves

Even though the midweek results went against Portsmouth in terms of what the teams around them did, Pompey do have the chance to respond themselves.

The Blues face Frank Lampard’s Coventry City on Wednesday night, and given that this is their game in hand, there is no shortage of pressure.

Portsmouth will not want to slip up in this particular fixture, as having just a three-point gap above the relegation zone can lead to them dropping in after just one poor result.

Mousinho’s men still have several tricky fixtures remaining this season, therefore the need to remain focused and deliver a high-quality performance against the Sky Blues is certainly there.
