John Mousinho delivers Portsmouth injury blow as hamstring issue confirmed

Portsmouth continued to keep supporters on the edge of their seats after a 2-2 draw with Derby County on Saturday.

The game saw Rob Atkinson return from injury to score three goals, one an own goal to put the Rams ahead, before putting that right with the equaliser in the 91st minute.

The point has seen the South Coast club slip down to 19th in the Championship table, although four points clear of the relegation zone.

While John Mousinho may have been glad to see Atkinson return from the sidelines, his place in the treatment room has quickly been filled by someone else.

Mousinho delivers Portsmouth injury update

As the boss announced his line-up for the game against Derby, supporters were surprised to see the omission of Thomas Waddingham.

Although he had been handed his full debut against Coventry City in the week and impressed for 55 minutes before being substituted, there was not even a place on the bench for the 20-year-old.

It has been a slow start to life at Fratton Park for Waddingham who joined during the winter transfer window and made just eight appearances so far as he looks to get his fitness up, ready to compete in the Championship.

Unfortunately for Pompey fans, it’s not positive news again after the boss confirmed that he was missing from the game due to injury, again.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent (12 April), Mousinho said: “He felt his hamstring the other night and that’s probably a consequence of the fact it was his first start in English football.

“We’ll see how that settles down and probably scan him on Monday.”

Portsmouth have to stay calm

Mousinho’s men gained a good point given they looked like losing going into the final minutes of the game with Derby, and they all count at the end of the season.

That being said, dropping to 19th in the table will build the nerves at Fratton Park ahead of the crucial final weeks of the campaign.

Pompey haven’t had the best luck with injuries throughout the season so far, and losing Waddingham again only adds to those woes.

Portsmouth have some big games ahead.

There are some massive games ahead between now and the end of the term for the South Coast outfit to try and get as many points as possible on the board.

It may be a nervy time but the manager has to ensure his side keeps their calm and find ways to get past their opponents to retain their position in the Championship.
