Colby Bishop sends Portsmouth fans message after Derby draw

Colby Bishop was denied from the penalty spot as Portsmouth played out a dramatic 2-2 draw with Derby at Fratton Park on Saturday.

Pompey’s draw leaves them four points above the drop zone with just four games left to play in the second tier.

John Mousinho’s men should be on course to secure their Championship safety, but they could drop to 20th if Hull manage to beat playoff chasers Coventry on Monday.

Rob Atkinson was the hero for Pompey on Saturday as his brace, including a 91st-minute equaliser, rescued a point against fellow relegation candidates Derby.

Bishop sends message to Pompey fans after penalty miss v Derby

Portsmouth would have taken an early lead over Derby if Bishop had been able to get the better of Jacob Zetterstrom, with chaos following.

Bishop addressed his miss from 12 yards via his Instagram story [12 April]: “These things happen. Great character from the lads. Thank you for your support, on to Friday.”

Bishop should be able to bounce back from Derby setback

The Pompey squad proved their resilience against Derby when they twice recovered from behind to draw 2-2 at Fratton Park with John Eustace’s men.

But perhaps no player in the Portsmouth squad knows how to recover from a setback more than striker Bishop, who underwent heart surgery ahead of the Championship season.

Remarkably, the 28-year-old scored in his first appearance of the season when Mousinho’s side beat Preston on 9 November, and has since gone on to prove he can produce the goods at second tier level, as he has notched seven goals and three assists in 28 appearances.

He held the key to Pompey’s League One title success last campaign as he scored 21 goals in 44 outings.

Bishop has shown he should have the attacking prowess required to keep the Fratton Park club in the Championship, and will be eager to get himself on the scoresheet against Norwich on 18 April, after seeing his penalty stopped by Zetterstrom.

The striker will be key in the remaining four games to come.
