‘Regan Poole in trouble at Portsmouth’ as Mousinho shares injury development

Regan Poole could be set for a difficult end to the season at Portsmouth.

The 26-year-old has had an up-and-down campaign at Pompey but has become a regular in recent weeks, playing 90 minutes in the last eight games.

John Mousinho has shown faith in the Wales international who had a chequered record on the south coast in recent months.

With that being said, the rest of the Championship season could be a struggle for the defender, as the head coach shared an injury update at Fratton Park.

Poole to struggle as injury update emerges

The PO4 club are nearing survival after their draw against Derby County, which would represent a huge achievement for the side.

It is fair to say that Poole has had a positive impact since coming in, after making just 13 starts before the start of March.

Even with that being the case, Mousinho could be in line to utilise other players, especially with Conor Shaughnessy returning from injury in the coming weeks.

The 28-year-old has been absent since February, but the Pompey boss has revealed in his press conference, shared via The News (15 April), that the defender is back in training.

He said: “He’s come back well, but he’s only had two training sessions, so I don’t think it’s fair for Conor.

“Conor’s got a different injury record this season to most, as well having hardly featured and having picked up soft tissue injuries. With Shocks, I don’t think we’ll see him until Sheffield Wednesday.”

Shaughnessy return spells trouble for Poole at Portsmouth

It makes sense for Pompey to slowly allow the Irishman to return to first-team action after so long away due to injury.

Rushing him back for the final games of the season could prove to be a step too far and result in a setback for the defender.

With that being said, Poole is bound to have one eye over his shoulder as his place could be at risk once Shaughnessy is fully fit.

The Welshman will already be fearing for his spot in the side after the eventful return of Rob Atkinson against Derby County last weekend.

Mousinho will now have a decision to make in the near future, but it may not prove to be a positive time for the starting prospects of the former Manchester United youngster.
