John Mousinho provides Callum Lang injury update

Portsmouth are still vying to retain their Championship status while star man Callum Lang remains absent due to a hamstring injury.

John Mousinho’s men have not tasted victory since their 1-0 triumph over Blackburn on 29 March, and need to get back to winning ways.

After playing out a dramatic 2-2 draw with relegation rivals Derby on Saturday, the Fratton Park club are now just four points clear of the drop zone.

However, the Blues can still take positive momentum from Rob Atkinson’s last-gasp equaliser against the Rams.

Mousinho provides Lang injury update

Lang last featured for Pompey in their 2-0 win over Oxford on 15 February before suffering a hamstring problem.

Mousinho told The News that there is a slight chance the January 2024 signing could return to action this term: “He’s been training now for the past couple of days. So we’ll see where he is, probably at the back end of next week, but I’m very doubtful we’ll see him again this season. It’s not entirely out of the question, but I’m 99.9 per cent sure.”

Before encountering injury woes, Lang had scored 10 goals in 29 Championship outings for Mousinho’s men.

Lang’s injury timeline is not good news for Portsmouth

Mousinho has all but confirmed that Lang is out for the remainder of the Championship campaign amid Pompey’s battle for survival.

Lang was class for Portsmouth before his injury

While Josh Murphy has produced the goods for Mousinho’s side regularly, Lang remains Portsmouth’s top scorer this term, and the Fratton Park club have missed his attacking spark since he has been sidelined.

The former Wigan man is capable of producing moments of magic, as demonstrated when he notched all four goals in a 4-1 victory over Coventry back in December.

But Pompey will now have to negotiate the rest of their battle against relegation without his goal-scoring services.

Mousinho and Co will believe that they can avoid the drop even without Lang, but they are certainly a more dangerous team when the 26-year-old is available.
