That grit was needed at Fratton Park on Monday (21 April) as they had to grind out a 1-0 victory against Watford to guarantee their safety.
A 25th-minute goal from Colby Bishop was ultimately all that was needed, although John Mousinho’s men had to defend well to ensure that they earned the three points.

Portsmouth were certainly helped by having a numerical advantage for the majority of the game, as Watford had 10 men from the 52nd minute.
Kevin Keben ended up seeing red after he brought down Josh Murphy when he was through on goal in the second half.
The Pompey striker was looking to extend their lead when he was hacked down, seemingly leaving the official with no choice but to award a red card.

Even though there were some Watford fans were up in arms about the decision, former Premier League official Keith Hackett exclusively revealed to Pompey News that the right call was made.
He said: “The defender has allowed the forward to get in front of him and fouls him, [it is a] clear denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity.”

Portsmouth have relieved their stress
It has been very tight at the bottom of the league this season in regards to relegation, with numerous teams all being in the fight to survive.
It is likely that it will go down to the wire in regards to which teams will avoid the drop to League One, and that’s why Pompey fans will be in a jubilant mood today, as that’s no longer something they have to worry about.
The Blues will head into the final two games of the season with no pressure on them, as consecutive losses will have no bearing on their safety.
