Callum Lang shares why he’s ‘absolutely fuming’ with Portsmouth ace Colby Bishop

Portsmouth may have celebrated their Championship survival on Easter Monday but Callum Lang jokingly shared why he was not overly impressed with Colby Bishop.

After a nervy few weeks, Portsmouth are certain to be in the Championship next season. The club are six points clear of the relegation zone with two games left to play after their 1-0 win over Watford with Derby and Hull still yet to play each other a second time.

There were big stakes going into the match with John Mousinho nervously “looking over his shoulder” as relegation became a real possibility.

However, Colby Bishop went on to score the only goal of the game 25 minutes in as he netted his 11th of the Championship campaign.

While this no doubt caused joy throughout Fratton Park, Lang – with tongue firmly in cheek – shared why he was not overly enamoured about the goalscorer.

Lang jokes about Bishop winner for Portsmouth

Amid the battle to stay in the Championship this season, there has been another battle within the Portsmouth squad.

Both Lang and Bishop have been fighting to finish as the club’s top scorer this campaign, with both forwards going into the Watford game on 10 Championship goals each this term.

The duo have been sensational so far, with Bishop earning a 10/10 rating after he scored a hat-trick past Norwich on Good Friday.

However, after Colby’s goal on Easter Monday, Lang is now one behind with two games left to play.

Colby Bishop has overtaken Callum Lang with two games to go

While the 26-year-old was no doubt overjoyed with the result, he was determined to finish above his team-mate by the end of the season.

He told the official Portsmouth website (21 April) after the Watford result: “Happy days. That’s what we’ve been working so hard towards – the job’s done and we’re all so happy.

“But I’m absolutely fuming with Colby because he’s scored 11 now and has gone above me. If anyone deserves that, then he does.

“There are still a couple of games to go, though, and I might still notch one or two, so it’s not done quite yet.”

Portsmouth must aim to finish the Championship season on a high

Now that survival is certain, Mousinho must ensure that the players do not take their foot off the gas.

Portsmouth could still mathematically secure a 12th-place finish, which would be a sensational end to their first Championship campaign in over a decade.

Thankfully, judging from Lang’s recent comments, he is determined to give the remaining two games his all in an attempt to beat Bishop’s goalscoring feat.

In comparison, Bishop, who has been tipped to win the Championship Golden Boot next season, will be aiming to hold his team-mate off.

Hopefully, many of the Portsmouth players will continue their good form in an attempt to pick up further points against Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City – two highly winnable games.
