Ian Darke reveals why Portsmouth survival is ‘bigger’ than promotion
Portsmouth have endured a marathon season, full of highs and lows, but are now sure of their place in the Championship for next term.
Pompey won each of their Easter weekend matches against Norwich City and Watford to grab the six points required for survival.
It means the Blues can also look forward to the return of the South Coast derby in the league in 2025-26, as John Mousinho‘s men now try and finish the season with a flourish.

Ian Darke claims this year outweighs last year’s achievements
Portsmouth have had a rough ride this season, but have passed their assignment – and can now enjoy a summer of excitement ahead of a second year at Championship level.
Pompey will also be facing Southampton in the league next year for the first time since 2011/12.
TV commentator and Blues supporter Ian Darke has insisted that safety this year is a more impressive achievement than the League One title 12 months ago.
Darke, speaking exclusively to Pompey News, has added that, particularly away from home, where Mousinho’s Blues have faltered a lot of the time, the results have been harsh compared to performances.
“What’s at least encouraging for Pompey is that in these away games they’ve lost this season, of the more recent ones, they have barely been outplayed,” he said.
“They’re holding their own and being edged out of games by top sides. They have the ability to get results, Pompey, and now that’s come to fruition.
“I did think maybe Norwich could unexpectedly yield something, and if not, then maybe Sheffield Wednesday. Pompey staying up on the budget and injuries they’ve had is arguably a bigger achievement than getting promoted last year.”

Portsmouth have two games left to play
Mousinho will want Portsmouth to finish strongly, but there could be some rotation for the final two fixtures of the season.
Pompey head to Sheffield Wednesday this Saturday (26 April), the Owls also now without any league permutations riding on the result.
Portsmouth – final two | Date |
Sheffield Wed (A) | 26 April |
Hull (H) | 3 May |
However, the same cannot be said, at least for now, at Hull City, the Blues’ final-day opponents at Fratton Park (3 May).
Hull remain just two points above the drop zone in the Championship, and may have to earn a result at Fratton to confirm their survival.
