Poole shares ‘vital’ Portsmouth admission after Championship survival confirmed

Portsmouth secured their Championship status with two games still to play by earning a 1-0 win over Watford at Fratton Park.

The result means that Pompey have built a six-point gap over Luton Town, who occupy 22nd place in the league table, but with Derby still having to play Hull City it means Pompey cannot be relegated.

With just two games to go, the pressure is now off John Mousinho’s side, who are the first of the promoted teams to clinch safety.

In what has been a remarkable turnaround on the South Coast, Regan Poole has reflected on a significant factor that led to his club’s survival.

Poole pinpoints Portsmouth survival factor

Portsmouth spent a significant chunk of the Championship season in the relegation zone, but after defeating Middlesbrough in December, they have managed to steer clear.

Mousinho’s side has also been on the receiving end of some substantial defeats, with their 6-1 drubbing away at Stoke City a standout result.

Poole, however, highlighted that his side possesses an ace card that has assisted them in retaining their Championship status.

Speaking on Portsmouth’s official website (22 April), he said: “There were some heavy defeats on the road and we always picked ourselves back up, so fully deserve to be here.

“Our home form has been vital and thanks to all the fans because without them, I don’t think we’d be where we are.

“I think that with a fully fit squad, we’ll be ready to challenge next season and that’s such an exciting feeling.”

Pompey must improve away form next season

There is no doubt that Portsmouth have been stronger at Fratton Park, with the club making their home a fortress this season.

The South Coast side currently ranks as the seventh strongest home side in the division, with 39 of their 52 points coming in Hampshire.

Furthermore, Pompey have only conceded 20 of their 69 goals at Fratton Park, further emphasising the issue they have on the road.

By contrast, Mousinho’s side ranks as the second-worst away side in the division, with only Plymouth Argyle gaining fewer points.

Moreover, the 49 goals that Portsmouth have conceded on the road make them the worst away defence in the league.

It must be noted that the second-tier side has had its injury problems during the campaign, with Hayden Matthews and Rob Atkinson suffering long-term injuries.

Another defender who has spent significant time on the sidelines is Ibane Bowat, who has not played a single game for Portsmouth this season due to a knee injury.

All things considered, Pompey have completed a remarkable season by ensuring their Championship status with two games to spare.

With Fratton Park one of the toughest grounds to visit, Portsmouth must now improve their form on the road for the next campaign.
