Christian Burgess sends Portsmouth message as Championship survival guaranteed

Portsmouth recently secured their Championship status for another season after defeating Watford 1-0 at Fratton Park.

The result means that John Mousinho’s side are six points above the relegation zone with two matches still to play.

The atmosphere around the South Coast side has been jubilant, and former player Christian Burgess has taken to social media to share his thoughts on the achievement.

Christian Burgess responds to Portsmouth post

Burgess spent five years at Fratton Park and racked up over 200 appearances during his time with the Hampshire club.

During his time with Pompey, he achieved promotion to League One and clearly still has a soft spot for them, judging by his social media post.

In response to Portsmouth’s X post of ‘WE ARE STAYING UP’, the 33-year-old replied: “Buzzing for everyone connected to the club! Up the blues.”

The centre-back’s post was greeted by largely warm replies, with some even calling for him to return to Fratton Park for one last dance.

Now that the club have ensured their second-tier status, the aim will be to build an improved squad for the following season.

What has Burgess been doing since he left Portsmouth?

Having spent five years with Pompey, the defender departed the club for Union Saint-Gilloise on a free transfer in the summer of 2020.

His final season on the South Coast ended in heartbreak as Portsmouth suffered defeat in the League One play-off semi-finals, with Burgess captaining the side.

However, that experience drove the defender on in Belgium, with Union SG winning the 1B Pro League, achieving promotion to the top flight in the process.

Burgess has helped his side twice finish top of the regular-season standings in the Jupiler Pro League title but on both occasions they finished second after the play-offs, but they did lift the Belgian Cup in 2023-24.

Throughout his time in Belgium, the centre-back has been a regular starter and has notched 208 appearances for the club.

He is now approaching his fifth anniversary with the club, who are sitting third in the table and two points off the leaders, Club Brugge.

Having achieved success in Belgium, Burgess evidently still follows his former side and will be keeping an eye on their development as they prepare for a second season in the Championship.
