Portsmouth players celebrate awards night as winners revealed at Fratton Park

Portsmouth enjoyed their annual awards night at Fratton Park this week, as players from all teams earned recognition for their outstanding achievements.

John Mousinho’s men’s team, Jay Sadler’s women’s team and Sam Hudson’s academy team were all in attendance for the event, which saw several players scoop various accolades.

Mousinho’s blue and white army secured their Championship status with Easter Monday’s win over Watford, while Sadler’s women’s side can achieve the same feat if they keep themselves above Sheffield United before the end of the campaign.

Portsmouth awards handed out as one player scoops hat-trick

Portsmouth did what they set out to do at the start of the season, overcoming adversity to retain their place in the Championship for 2025-26.

Sadler rallied his women’s team with a speech at the event, as they contest their final Championship fixture of the season this Sunday (27 April) against Blackburn Rovers.

If the Blues can keep themselves above one of Blackburn or Sheffield United – who each have two games left and a superior goal difference – they will stay up in a bitterly close relegation battle.

In terms of the awards, Josh Murphy took home three trophies for his tremendous debut campaign at Fratton Park, as he earned the Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season and Goal of the Season awards. Murphy has 20 goal contributions this term, and his stunner against QPR in February was enough to topple the goals prize.

Hannah Coan doubled up with the women’s awards, the impressive defender claiming both the Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season prizes for her performances since arriving from Blackburn.

Tayo Singerr has been outstanding for Hudson’s Under-18 prospects this year and picked up the Academy Player of the Season award – the forward will soon hope to make his full debut in a Pompey shirt as he won the accolade under the watchful eye of Mousinho.

Meg Hornby from the women’s side won the Community Player of the Season award, while late Blues supporter Alec Lumb – who tragically passed away at Fratton Park earlier this year – was posthumously named as Fan of the Season.

Mousinho gives rousing speech at Fratton event

Mousinho looked ahead to the prospect of a fresh season of Championship football in Portsmouth starting later this year.

The head coach – who in his first managerial role has now taken Pompey into the second tier and kept them there – described 2024-25 as an “emotional rollercoaster”.

“I’m just delighted we’ve managed to secure Championship football for next season,” Mousinho stated (Portsmouth FC, 23 April).

“It has been an emotional rollercoaster, without being too cliched, because of the nature of performances and results, and we’ve had to pick ourselves up at times.

“There were some really dark times for the players, supporters and staff to go through, and to be standing here to say we’ll play Championship football next season is a really special achievement.”
