Mousinho has ‘major issue to address’ as Portsmouth exit all but confirmed

John Mousinho will likely already be thinking ahead to next season, although it looks as though he will be without one key Portsmouth player.

Portsmouth secured their place in next season’s Championship by beating Watford 1-0 at Fratton Park on Monday (21 April).

As a result, the mood is likely to be a celebratory one among the travelling Portsmouth supporters as they make their way to Hillsborough to take on Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday (26 April).

With nothing left to play for, fans will be looking ahead to next season with excitement, especially as they will get the opportunity to renew their rivalry with Southampton in the Championship.

However, it looks as though Mousinho already has a major issue to address, with one player’s exit all but confirmed despite the summer transfer window not yet opening.

Mousinho must replace key midfielder at Portsmouth

After securing Championship survival, Mousinho has reaffirmed his commitment to Portsmouth.

Therefore, the 38-year-old will no doubt be keen to build on this season during the upcoming campaign. However, that task looks set to be made all the more difficult after a recent reveal.

Freddie Potts has been one of Portsmouth’s key players this season, with the midfielder a major part of the reason that the South Coast club avoided relegation.

However, it looks as though the 21-year-old is set to return to parent club West Ham United. While speaking exclusively to Pompey News, former Hammers midfielder Martin Allen suggested Graham Potter will be keen to get Potts back in the squad for pre-season.

Therefore, it looks as though Mousinho will have a hole to fill in his midfield next season.

Portsmouth must move on from Potts

Football supporters across the country know the dangers of falling in love with a loan player. However, it would have been difficult for Portsmouth supporters not to with Potts.

The West Ham loanee has started 33 times in the Championship and made 38 appearances, with his impressive performances at a young age key to Portsmouth’s survival.

Therefore, should he return to West Ham and not spend another season on loan with Portsmouth, Mousinho will need to replace the midfielder.
