Paul Merson shoots down Farke’s Leeds comments as Portsmouth example raised

Paul Merson used his Portsmouth experience to shoot down a recent comment from Daniel Farke.

Leeds United and Pompey find themselves at polar opposite ends of the table right now, with the Whites having gained promotion to the Premier League, while the Blues have just avoided relegation.

The Yorkshire giants have secured promotion this season, and are now embroiled in a battle to win the Championship with Burnley.

It is set to go down to the wire as both teams are currently on the same number of points, with goal difference currently being in Leeds’ favour.

Merson doesn’t buy into Daniel Farke’s beliefs

Leeds fans are desperate to see the team go all the way and finish the season on top of the table to wrap up what has been an unbelievable campaign for them.

However, Leeds boss Daniel Farke doesn’t seem to share that sentiment as he admitted to not particularly caring if they won the league or not in his recent press conference.

That’s something that took Merson by surprise, and during his latest appearance on Sky Sports News, the former Pompey player gave his thoughts on the situation.

He said: “People think they’ve done the job now, got promoted, that’s it. But I’ve captained Portsmouth, and of course, you want to go the distance.”

Farke might need to win the title

Despite Farke’s impressive work at Elland Road this season in gaining Leeds promotion, his job is now reportedly on the line.

In a major surprise to supporters, there have been claims that Leeds are considering firing Farke ahead of their return to the English top flight due to his poor record in keeping teams up in the Premier League.

That is why winning the league might now be necessary for him in terms of job security, as it would arguably be harder for Leeds’ owners to justify sacking him after claiming the title.

Portsmouth are also in a situation where they could lose their manager during the post-season period as there is a concern that other clubs might look to swoop in and take John Mousinho.

Mousinho has impressed during his time at Fratton Park, and West Brom have been linked with the Pompey manager, although Blues supporters will be desperate for him to stay.
