Portsmouth set sights on overseas striker as first summer transfer
Portsmouth successfully secured survival in the Championship, and will now aim to progress up the table.
Pompey returned to the Championship for the first time in 12 years, and have enjoyed an impressive first season as they secured survival with games to spare despite a lower budget than most of the division.
John Mousinho will now aim to add to his squad in the summer transfer window, but Portsmouth will need to be creative as they again aim to punch above their weight.
Although striker Colby Bishop has been impressive for most of the campaign, another attacker now appears to be top of the transfer priority list.
Portsmouth target striker Tomas Galvin
Bishop recently scored a perfect hat-trick against Norwich City in the Championship, and Portsmouth are now looking to support him by supplementing their attack.
It has now been reported by Football League World (27 April) that Portsmouth are interested in signing Dungannon Swifts striker Tomas Galvin.
Portsmouth – top scorers | Goals | Assists |
Colby Bishop | 11 | 3 |
Callum Lang | 10 | 2 |
Josh Murphy | 7 | 13 |
Galvin competes in the NIFL Premiership division and is regarded as an up-and-coming talent within Northern Ireland.
Wrexham, Charlton and Bolton are also keen on signing the attacker, whose contract runs out in 2026, meaning a transfer fee will need to be spent to bring him in.
Portsmouth need another striker this summer
Although Bishop has been impressive, more depth is necessary in the position, with some of Portsmouth’s backup options failing to contribute in front of goal.
Kusini Yengi has failed to score in 14 games, while Christian Saydee scored twice in 30 matches as a centre-forward.
The other central strikers at Fratton Park were only on loan, and a younger option in the position would be a wise signing.
Galvin has already made 70 senior appearances for Dungannon Swifts, and has scored 17 goals in that time, with it believed that he has a bright future ahead as he continues to develop.
Portsmouth already signed Terry Devlin from Northern Ireland, and they clearly believe that scouting the region will help them sign some top talents who could develop into useful first-team players.
