Matt Le Tissier sends message from Fratton Park after Portsmouth appearance

Portsmouth are set to face Southampton in the South Coast derby again next season, reigniting a heated rivalry between the two clubs.

Portsmouth secured their safety in their first Championship campaign in 12 years, and will continue in the second division next season.

Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League will mean the two sides will compete in the same division for the first time in 13 years.

The heated rivalry saw memorable players on both sides face each other, and one of those was Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier.

Le Tissier was a one-club man for Southampton and has competed in the South Coast derby.

Given his legendary status at Southampton, he is far from a popular figure among Pompey fans, but he has now done something respectful.

Le Tissier was named on the opposition side as Portsmouth legends faced a celebrity XI in a charity match for Alan Knight.

Portsmouth legend Knight has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the proceeds of the match will go to charities.

Le Tisser arrived at Fratton Park to play in the match, and he posted a cheeky dig on X, captioned “Entered enemy territory.”

Le Tissier’s record against Portsmouth

Despite holding a strong scoring record in English football, as a highly talented and respected player of his generation, Le Tissier has little history when it comes to the South Coast derby.

The Englishman appeared in just two South Coast derbies throughout his career, and just one of those was in the First Division.

That league game took place in 1992, and Portsmouth won 2-0 at St Mary’s with Le Tissier appearing as a half-time substitute.

His only start against Pompey saw the Saints run out 3-0 winners in an FA Cup tie in 1996, and he never made a competitive appearance against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Although he is unpopular among Pompey fans, those in attendance at the charity match did appreciate Le Tissier’s support given the cause.
