Portsmouth achieve unique Championship feat after latest sack updates

Portsmouth secured their Championship safety with two games to spare and have enjoyed a productive season overall.

Pompey were back in the Championship after a 12-year absence, but punched above their weight as they finished in 16th place, above several clubs with bigger budgets.

John Mousinho earned plaudits for his work with Portsmouth, which has now meant that other clubs are eyeing him up.

Watford are the latest club to be linked with Mousinho, having sacked Tom Cleverley in recent days, and that news means Portsmouth have achieved a unique Championship feat.

Portsmouth and Mousinho untouched after sacking

Cleverley’s surprise sacking from Watford meant that they joined a long list of clubs who ended the season with a different manager from the one they started it with.

This also means that Portsmouth are the only club in the entire bottom half to have stuck with their same manager throughout the Championship season.

Norwich City, Watford, Oxford United, Stoke City, Derby County, Preston, Hull City, Luton Town, Plymouth Argyle and Cardiff City all changed managers at some point between the start and end of the season.

QPR, who finished in 15th, have placed Marti Cifuentes on gardening leave ahead of his imminent departure, meaning they will also be on the lookout for a new head coach.

Portsmouth faith in Mousinho pays off

It could have been easy for Portsmouth to dismiss Mousinho at the start of the season, when Pompey won just one of their first 14 Championship games.

Their first win came against QPR in October, and with the seaside club fearing relegation at that point, the temptation could have been to replace Mousinho with a more experienced Championship manager.

However, Portsmouth kept faith in their coach, and that paid off. Pompey recovered their form in the second half of the season, and their strong results at Fratton Park played a huge part.

Pompey then secured survival with ease, and faith in Mousinho was rewarded. Now, fans will be hoping he stays to help push Portsmouth further up the Championship table.
