Portsmouth make major Joe Morrell transfer call as interest emerges

Joe Morrell is attracting interest ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with the former Portsmouth midfielder still a free agent.

The Wales international played a key role in helping the Hampshire outfit achieve Championship promotion in the 2023/24 season before picking up a significant injury.

Morrell was released by Pompey last summer as they opted against extending his stay, and he’s since been without a club.

The 28-year-old is now ready to return to action after his fitness issue, and he’s made a decision on his future.

Morrell to stay in England as Portsmouth transfer ruled out

Morrell won’t be returning to Fratton Park in the upcoming transfer window, Andrew Moon says.

The BBC journalist is looking forward to seeing where the Welshman will end up playing his football next.

Moon revealed that there’s been interest in the 28-year-old from abroad, but it looks like he’ll stay in England, although a return to Pompey has been ruled out.

The journalist wrote on X (13 May): “Be really interesting to see where Joe Morrell ends up this summer. After some interest from abroad looks like he’ll be staying in England (won’t be returning to Pompey).”

John Mousinho must be backed at Fratton Park

John Mousinho has done an impressive job in the Championship, leading to interest from West Brom in his services.

Josh Murphy has been a revelation at Fratton Park, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see top teams making an approach for his signature.

Freddie Potts has returned to West Ham United after a fruitful loan spell at Pompey, and the English manager will arguably want a quality replacement for the midfielder.

Portsmouth had a poor start to the 2024/25 campaign, but had an upsurge in form after investing in the winter transfer window.

Rich Hughes will be expected to reinforce the Hampshire outfit’s squad next summer to avoid another nervous relegation battle at Fratton Park.

While Morrell was influential at Pompey before his injury, they’re right not to pursue a return.

The Wales midfielder has been on the sidelines for a year, and it would make sense for him to restart his career in League One and get regular minutes.

What the Blues will do i the summer transfer window, remains to be seen.
