Portsmouth ‘transfer guaranteed’ as fantastic Rob Atkinson claim made

Rob Atkinson will arguably be a name discussed at Fratton Park as Portsmouth plan for the upcoming transfer window.

The defender signed for the Hampshire outfit on loan from Bristol City in the winter transfer window, and helped them survive Championship relegation.

Pompey relied on Atkinson’s defensive strength towards the end of the season, and it would make sense for them to pursue a permanent transfer for him.

John Mousinho will want reinforcements at Fratton Park next summer, and one position they’ll seemingly look to strengthen is centre-back.

Atkinson transfer would be fantastic as Portsmouth want one centre-back

Pompey are guaranteed to sign at least one centre-back in the upcoming transfer window, Andrew Moon says.

The BBC South journalist believes the Hampshire outfit will add one central defender to their ranks next summer.

Moon feels it would be fantastic if Atkinson were re-signed at Fratton Park after an impressive loan spell, but it remains to be seen whether that’ll happen.

Speaking on Who Needs Mourinho (14 May), the journalist said: “I think there’ll be one centre-back coming in, and it would be fantastic if it were Atkinson. But either way, I think one will come in.”

Michael Eisner to back Mousinho at Fratton Park

Michael Eisner will be delighted at Pompey after avoiding an immediate relegation to League One.

Mousinho will want to make further progress at the Hampshire outfit, which will undoubtedly require huge funds to be invested next summer.

Alexander Milosevic has left Fratton Park, and while the veteran Swede didn’t feature much for the Blues, his influence in the dressing room was pivotal.

Portsmouth have lost depth in their backline, and while Conor Shaughnessy has returned from his injury and Hayden Matthews will also be in action next season, they evidently need more options in defence.

The Hampshire outfit must show faith in Mousinho and give him the tools to establish them in the Championship before pushing for another promotion.

Pompey had a bad start in the 2024/25 campaign and were seen as one of the favourites to go down, but making several key signings in the winter transfer window helped them.

The hierarchy at Fratton Park shouldn’t wait until January and build a squad next summer capable of pushing up the table.

Atkinson should be pursued by the Hampshire outfit as he’s already shown his capabilities.
