Mousinho optimistic as Portsmouth new contract talks revealed

Portsmouth are ready to start preparing for next season, with their retained list recently being published at Fratton Park.

The South Coast side had a solid season, retaining their position in the Championship for a second consecutive year.

However, the key for Portsmouth has to be to build upon their progress, making sure there is no fight against relegation next season.

Mousinho delivers update on Ben Killip contract at Portsmouth

Although Mousinho can start planning for next season, for the most part, the future of goalkeeper Ben Killip is still in doubt.

Pompey have offered Killip a new contract after he reached the end of his deal this summer, despite only signing in the winter transfer window.

Nicolas Schmid was the number one choice between the sticks for most of the season, but Killip started the two final games of the campaign.

Killip has had limited game time for Portsmouth.

Seemingly, the 29-year-old has done enough to impress Mousinho and suggest that he is good enough to provide the competition needed on the South Coast, with the offer of a new deal on the table.

It also looks as though conversations are progressing well, too, as Mousinho is optimistic over securing a new deal.

He said via the Portsmouth website (15 May): “Other people are involved in the discussions with Ben, but he was enthusiastic about coming back here in January and I believe talks are progressing well.”

Portsmouth could do with keeping Killip

Killip may not be the man who is going to be getting regular minutes and turning everything around at Portsmouth next season, but he is a solid option to have in the ranks.

Pompey paid an undisclosed fee to gain his services from Barnsley in the winter transfer window, so losing him now would make that seem like a waste, given he made just two appearances.

Furthermore, with additions needed this term, needing to spend less money on adding new faces to the side can only be a benefit.

Battling against some big budgets in the league, added to with the promotion of Birmingham City and Wrexham, the Blues need to be shrewd in their business.

Therefore, securing Killip on a new contract would be a good start ahead of entering the summer transfer window.
