Portsmouth finances to blame after Fratton Park exit confirmed

Portsmouth have every reason to be ecstatic after securing their Championship status at the first attempt.

John Mousinho pulled off the almighty feat despite the Fratton Park club occupying the relegation places for most of the season.

However, that joy turned to dust for some at the club, with a number of exits now confirmed at Pompey.

Reasons confirmed behind Portsmouth player departure

Mousinho must be afforded heaps of credit for what can only be describes as a monumental achievement at Fratton Park

The South Coast club were written off for much of the campaign, but went on a significant run of form which kept them in the division.

Their home form has been outstanding, and the supporters have played a substantial part in getting their team over the line.

Fratton Park was a fortress this season

Portsmouth recently announced their retained list, meaning several players are to depart when their contracts expire.

Kusini Yengi, Tom Lowery, Alexander Milosevic, Anthony Scully and Cohen Bramall will all be released from that list.

Speaking to BBC Sounds [15 May], Cohen Bramall discussed the reasons behind his departure from the South Coast club.

He said: “It wasn’t surprising because of the financial situation and the players that were already in my position.

“I wasn’t surprised, really. I kind of got told that before I got signed, that was the case.”

Bramall decision best for both parties

Football can be a brutal business, but key decisions must be made in the best interests of the club.

That is the case with Bramall, who will depart the South Coast after just six months at Fratton Park.

The left-back was signed from Rotherham United in a bid to cure Mousinho’s injury crisis and went on to make 12 league appearances.

However, only four of those appearances were starts as Connor Ogilvie was preferred in his position.

For Pompey, they must strengthen their squad to improve upon what was a memorable season in the Championship.

Portsmouth have been linked with a move for Sunderland man Nectarios Triantis, who will return from his season-long loan at Hibernian.

Although he is unproven in England, he has enjoyed a season to remember in the Scottish capital.

Triantis would be just the start, but Pompey will be expected to kick on and add quality to an already decent squad.
