Portsmouth top Championship stat thanks to Fratton Park support

Portsmouth fans were thrilled to bits with the outcome of their side’s first season back in the Championship

John Mousinho’s men retained their second-tier status which was the primary goal before the start of the season, due in no small part to their fantastic home support.

Pompey edged clear of their rivals and were mathematically clear of the drop before the final day, which allowed the Fratton Park faithful a massive sigh of relief.

Rival teams have repeatedly made reference to the chaotic atmosphere Portsmouth’s home ground can create, with the noise amplifying onto the pitch to push Pompey forward.

Pompey top of the pile in attendance statistic

Now, Portsmouth’s committed home support has been statistically proven.

According to FanHub, Portsmouth lead the Championship in the average percentage of their stadium they fill.

Pompey pack out 97.9 per cent of Fratton Park throughout the season, which is the highest total in the second tier.

Luton Town sit just behind with 97.5 per cent, with Norwich City completing the rostrum with 96.6 per cent.

At the opposite end of the division are Blackburn Rovers, who only manage to fill 51.5 per cent of Ewood Park on average.

The Fratton Park effect

Home advantage isn’t a new concept for football teams – traditionally, a club will always play better when roared on by their own supporters.

That said, Pompey’s contrast between their home and away performances is substantial.

Portsmouth’s home vs away record 2024/25

Portsmouth took points from 18 of their 23 games at Fratton Park, a brilliant record which places them eighth in the home table.

In contrast, Mousinho’s side only managed to win three times on their travels, with just relegated Plymouth Argyle the only team behind them in the away table.

Portsmouth fans won’t care where the team pick up their points, and the 16th place they achieved in the Championship will have exceeded many supporters’ pre-season expectations.

However, if Pompey are to push further up the division next term, they must pick up more points on the road.

If they can make that jump, whilst maintaining their impressive home form, 2025/26 could be a year to remember for Mousinho and Co.
