Portsmouth confirm captain exit in heartbreaking statement
Hannah Haughton has been an ever-present since signing for Portsmouth in 2018.
Pompey women have had a largely difficult campaign in the Championship this season after finishing ninth in the table.
This came after just three league wins in 2025 saw the PO4 club fall to just two places above the relegation zone as Sheffield United fell out of the division.
There will be hopes of a better campaign in the revamped WSL 2 next campaign, with a Haughton statement emerging ahead of the summer.

Haughton announcement shared at Portsmouth
There has been plenty of positivity surrounding the Women’s side on the south coast in recent years after winning promotion and avoiding relegation.
Arguably, maintaining a spot in the Championship has been one of the greatest achievements in recent years with Haughton at the heart of everything good.
Position | Club | Games played | Goal difference | Points |
9. | Portsmouth | 20 | -32 | 13 |
10. | Blackburn Rovers | 20 | -25 | 12 |
11. | Sheffield United | 20 | -25 | 7 |
The 32-year-old signed from bitter rivals Southampton over six years ago and has proven to be an exceptional piece of business.
This has seen the shotstopper be named as club captain while also representing Team GB at the 2019 Beach Games.
As well as being dubbed “England’s number one” for her performances in these tournaments, she was also nicknamed “penalty queen” for her antics in shootouts.
This has all culminated in her winning a Southern Premier Division Title, two Hampshire Cups and five PDFA Cups since her move to Fratton Park.
As a result, it is gutting for fans to learn of the latest statement as Pompey shared (22 May) the news that Haughton would be departing at the end of the season.
Haughton exit huge blow to Portsmouth
Nowadays, in football, finding players who are willing to spend such a lengthy period at one club is growing rare.
In the men’s team, Connor Ogilvie has spent the longest spell in PO4 at just four years compared to Haughton’s six plus.
This goes to show just how big of a miss the keeper will be to Pompey Women as the new WSL2 season looks set to roll around.
