John Mousinho exit: Three Championship clubs Portsmouth boss could join

John Mousinho is being linked with a move out of Portsmouth after keeping them up in the Championship this season.

The Portsmouth manager has been rumoured to leave to lead three sides all hunting for their next manager.

The Fratton Park side finished 16th in their first season back in the second flight, an impressive achievement given their 13-year-long absence.

Mousinho might be on his way to West Brom

The 39-year-old is one of the favourites to replace the former West Brom boss Tony Mowbray, following his brief second spell at the club in which he narrowly missed out on the play-offs. Oddschecker has Mousinho 8/1 to land the position behind Ryan Mason, who’s the front-runner.

Pompey fans have also feared their manager would switch the South to the East of England for the Norwich role. Jack Wilshere took over as interim manager after Johannes Hoff Thorup was sacked in April, but he wasn’t made permanent, and the club remains in pursuit of someone to get them back into the Premiership.

Hull finished just one place above relegation on goal difference, and head coach Ruben Selles was dismissed. With Premier League ambitions, the East Yorkshire side could be a preferred destination for the Pompey manager as they may have a bigger budget for changes in the summer.

Mousinho reassured fans that he will remain at the club, saying in quotes reported by The News (23 April): “Genuinely, my mindset is I’d like to have a long, successful career at Portsmouth.

“I still feel incredibly grateful to the club for taking a chance on me and a risk on me in the first place. I’ll never forget that.”

Portsmouth need Mousinho onboard

Mousinho’s men were sitting 15th in League One when he took charge in 2023. Even though it was his first season managing, he turned it around and guided them to finish two places shy of the play-offs in eighth place.

He’s a proven winner, bettering himself in the next season when he won the title, and then achieving safety in the Championship in the following campaign.

In an exclusive with Pompey news, financial expert Dan Plumey said he expects that Portsmouth will be due compensation if he chooses to leave. Mousinho has targeted several players he wants for the summer, and should everything go according to plan, it’s hoped he may remain grounded and stay.

If one thing is for certain, Mousinho is a must for Pompey to return to their Premiership glory days, 15 years since they were relegated.
