Portsmouth to benefit after new transfer developments – Exclusive

John Mousinho has a big summer ahead of him at Portsmouth, knowing that he needs to add to his squad to push up the Championship next season.

Mousinho did an impressive job with Pompey this term, guiding his side to Championship safety, despite competing with one of the lowest budgets in the league.

Although the aim at Fratton Park is to push higher next term, with Wrexham and Birmingham City being promoted to the second tier, it is looking to be another rich league.

Portsmouth can make use of alternative transfer strategy

Although the Blues went through some difficult times throughout the season, Michael Eisner made the call to stick beside his manager throughout the campaign.

The chief also showed Mousinho support when it came to adding players to the squad to increase strength for the final run of games.

However, with a lower budget than most, Pompey had to be shrewd with their business, which ultimately paid off.

Portsmouth’s chief executive Andy Cullen has revealed that the club will be targeting overseas transfers this summer as a way to reduce the money spent.

Finance expert Dan Plumley has suggested that this will be a strong way for the South Coast outfit to achieve their aims.

Speaking exclusively to Pompey News, he said: “It tends to be [cheaper] if you can get your scouting and recruitment right, and of course, there’s a risk factor within that because you’re putting players into a league that is very different from some of the leagues on the continent.

“But it is a cheaper option, we’ve talked about that English premium tax for transfers between English clubs and that’s relevant in the Championship as well, especially when you’re looking at clubs selling Championship to Championship rivals or even trying to look at buying from League One as well, it’s not always the easiest things to do.

“So if you can crack that foreign market, then there is risk attached, but it often turns out to be the cheapest strategy to follow.”

Portsmouth have to get to work

The summer transfer window will soon open, and Mousinho needs to be ready to get to work, putting his side in a comfortable position as pre-season creeps closer.

Although there is plenty of time before the new season gets underway, the importance of getting business done early cannot be underestimated.

It’s not surprising to see Pompey look towards the foreign market, either, with some gems available to pick up for a cheaper price.

It is a risk and getting additions who are able to make the move across to English football is key.

However, it certainly seems like a sensible way for the South Coast outfit to ensure they can compete next season.
