Portsmouth-linked star undergoes medical ahead of EFL transfer

Portsmouth are busy preparing to build their squad ready for the start of the new Championship season.

The Fratton Park side performed well to finish 16th in the second tier this season, but it’s widely accepted that they will have to recruit new stars to build on that.

However, it appears one player linked with a move to Fratton Park is set to move elsewhere.

Free agent linked with Pompey set for Huddersfield move

Ryan Ledson had been linked with Portsmouth for several months.

The former Preston midfielder, 27, was deemed to be able to provide the midfield presence that Pompey are seeking.

He had proven his worth with several years of consistent performances in the Championship, but has been released by Preston after his contract expired.

This seemed like the ideal scenario for Portsmouth, especially as the club needs to replace Freddie Potts in the heart of their midfield.

However, that deal looks dead for Pompey now. Journalist Alan Nixon reports (30 May) that Ledson is on his way to Huddersfield.

The report suggests that Ledson had completed a medical with the Terriers while they were without a manager. Now, with Lee Grant confirmed as their new boss, they are ready to complete the deal.

Midfield signing will be key to a successful transfer window

Portsmouth had a great season and will be looking to build on their 16th-place finish next year, but it won’t be easy.

Three strong sides have been promoted from League One, and the Blues have one of the smallest transfer budgets in the league. Indeed, Portsmouth have been named among the biggest underdogs for next season’s Championship.

The transfer window opens on 1 June, and the club will be looking to do their business quickly. This not only gives new signings more time to settle in, but also prevents rival clubs from making a move on their targets.

Ledson would have been a great addition to the squad, but fans can trust that Pompey are doing everything they can behind the scenes to sign the right players.

Manager John Mousinho made some astute signings last summer that made all the difference to the team. He should be trusted to do the same again this year.
