Mousinho leads way at Portsmouth after major sack news
John Mousinho has a lot to be excited about after leading Portsmouth to Championship safety this season.
The 39-year-old did a fantastic job on a limited budget to keep Portsmouth in the second tier.
Many figures across the world of football have sung his praises, and he has been linked with several high-profile jobs this summer.
Mousinho has insisted that he’s happy at Fratton Park and is focusing purely on preparing Portsmouth for the new season.
However, major news elsewhere in the Championship has put the spotlight on the young manager once again.

Mousinho is now longest-serving boss in the Championship
Mousinho is now officially the longest-serving manager from the 2024-25 Championship line-up, following Middlesbrough’s decision to sack Michael Carrick.
Carrick had been the longest-serving manager in the second tier this season, having joined Middlesbrough in October 2022.
Now, that record lies with Mousinho, who has been at Fratton Park for two years and four months.
Carrick’s sacking means that 17 of this year’s 24 Championship teams have changed their manager since August 2024.

Mousinho rumours unlikely to go away at Portsmouth
That statistic highlights the cutthroat nature of football management these days.
Two-and-a-half years is hardly a lifetime, but no other manager in the 2024-25 Championship has managed to remain in a job longer than that.
Mousinho has previously thanked the Portsmouth hierarchy for staying loyal to him, and he repaid their faith by keeping Pompey in the second tier.
That will have created an enormous amount of good will, so the manager is in no danger of being sacked any time soon.
John Mousinho’s record at Portsmouth | |
2022-23 | 8th in League One |
2023-24 | 1st in League One |
2024-25 | 16th in Championship |
However, the nature of football means that he will continue to be linked with bigger clubs for as long as he remains successful with Pompey.
And, with so many teams chopping and changing their managers, the rumours linking Mousinho with a move away from Fratton Park are unlikely to die down.
Mousinho’s already been linked with the vacant Bristol City manager job, and it’s only a matter of time until someone suggests that Middlesbrough want him too.
Michael Eisner and the board must do everything in their power to keep him at Fratton Park.
