Colby Bishop sends message as emotional Portsmouth farewell confirmed

Portsmouth have already confirmed several changes to their squad after securing survival in the Championship this season.

John Mousinho has released the likes of Kusini Yengi, Alexander Milosevic, Cohem Bramall, Tom Lowery, and Anthony Scully.

Colby Bishop was the star yet again after an emotional return to football in November, having undergone heart surgery last summer, firing the Blues to safety.

Bishop signed for the Blues from Accrington for £500,000 in 2022 and scored 11 Championship goals this season.

The striker has reacted after another new farewell message was posted on Saturday.

Bishop sends poignant message after Yengi’s exit

Yengi has penned an emotional goodbye message to everyone associated with Pompey on 7 June.

The Australian international faced multiple injury setbacks this season, having only featured 14 times for the Blues before being shown the exit.

His release was confirmed in May via Portsmouth’s retained list, and his fellow striker Bishop has now reacted to his farewell.

In an Instagram post, Yengi captioned a hard-hitting video by thanking the Blues for taking a chance.

He wrote: “While my second season didn’t go the way I’d hoped personally, as a club we fought, competed, held our own, and helped shape me into the player and person I am today.”

Yengi arrived on the south coast from Western Sydney Wanderers in July 2023 for an undisclosed fee.

The Australian international became a fan favourite during Portsmouth’s promotion from League One and managed nine goals in his first season in England.

Now, Pompey have waived the option to extend his two-year stay at Fratton Park.

Bishop reacted to the post with two heart emojis, one white and the other blue.

Bishop managed 21 goals during the South Coast clubs’ promotion season alongside Yengi.

Portsmouth could regret Yengi exit

Yengi showed in his League One season that when fit, he was a bright spark, averaging a goal every 95 minutes.

Injuries, however, again plagued his 2023/24 campaign, with fans wondering what the striker could achieve if he were to stay fit.

Portsmouth could regret not offering the Australian a new deal if he returns to his prolific form in the third tier, and Wycombe are one of the clubs interested in signing the striker.

However, keeping the forward for another injury-hit campaign would prove costly for Pompey, who already run on a tight budget.

Mousinho’s side have now freed up space in their squad to sign a replacement who could help them build on their 16th-place finish.

All eyes are already on new signings.
