Portsmouth favourite in running to replace Thomas Frank as next Brentford boss

Portsmouth fans are probably tired of hearing speculation about managers changing jobs.

It seems like every time a Championship club sacks their manager, John Mousinho is linked with the job.

Still, the managerial merry-go-round keeps spinning, and the bookmakers are already speculating over who will be the next Brentford boss if Thomas Frank joins Tottenham.

Gary O’Neil linked with Brentford manager job

Thankfully for Pompey fans, Mousinho isn’t in the list of favourites to take over at the GTech Community Stadium.

However, former Blues midfielder Gary O’Neil is in the running, according to TalkSPORT Bet (9 June). You can get odds of 16/1 for O’Neil to take over from Frank.

The favourite for the position is Frank’s assistant manager Justin Cochrane, whose only experience as a manager has come at England youth level. Other candidates include Kieran McKenna, Kjetil Knutsen and Danny Rohl.

Of course, most Bees fans are likely to be hoping that Frank doesn’t take the reins at Tottenham and chooses to stay at Brentford instead.

O’Neil deserves another shot at the big time

O’Neil came through the youth set-up at Pompey and made 192 appearances for the first team.

And, for the most part, he has taken to football management like a duck to water.

He kept Bournemouth in the Premier League in his first managerial role when the odds looked against him, but the Cherries’ owners sacked him anyway.

He then took over as Wolves manager and led them to Premier League safety in his first season. Sadly, his second season was full of struggles, and he was dismissed midway through the campaign.

Still, he has proven twice that he is more than capable of achieving success with a big club on limited resources.

Perhaps his record isn’t impressive enough for Brentford.

But would it be so far-fetched to suggest that O’Neil could eventually be a candidate for the managerial hotseat at Fratton Park?

No Pompey fan in their right mind would want to replace Mousinho now. Angry comments flood social media whenever the media suggests he might want to leave.

But, if he is eventually tempted away, O’Neil would appear to have all the credentials to take over.
