Portsmouth now rank above Sunderland in newly-revealed Championship table
Portsmouth enjoyed a strong end to the season as they secured Championship safety with games to spare, in an impressive feat.
Portsmouth were back in the second division for the first time in 12 years, but punched above their weight as they secured a very respectable 16th place finish.
John Mousinho has done an outstanding job since getting Pompey promoted, and keeping them in the Championship was no easy task.
Mousinho’s work looks even more impressive now, as a remarkable stat has emerged.

Portsmouth punch high in 2025 Championship table
Portsmouth recorded a superb run of form to finish the campaign after a few difficult weeks threw them back into fearing relegation, and Fratton Park was buzzing as they confirmed their safety.
Leeds won the Championship on the final day, with Burnley securing the automatic promotion spot and Sunderland winning the play-offs, and their route to the Premier League was particularly dramatic.
Team | Played | Goal difference | Points | Position |
Portsmouth | 24 | +1 | 34 | 7th |
Sunderland’s form was so dire heading into the play-offs that they actually rank below Portsmouth in the overall Championship table for 2025, which has now been revealed by BBC Sport (10 June).
Remarkably, Portsmouth sit seventh in the league for their form in 2025, with 34 points in 24 games.
This places them just one point below sixth-placed Bristol City in that time and are two points above Sunderland, who rank in eighth, and may show that Portsmouth have the means to eventually challenge for the play-off spots.

Portsmouth’s incredible turnaround
Returning to the Championship after a long spell in League One was never going to be easy, and Portsmouth could have feared the worst after picking up 20 points in their first 22 games.
Pompey recorded just four wins in their opening 22 Championship games, with the level of opposition clearly proving a problem, but they kept faith in Mousinho throughout, and he delivered.
The Blues even have a positive goal difference of one in 2025, having recorded a -14 difference in the first half of the campaign, and they will hope to carry this form into next season.
Who knows? A promotion charge could be on.
