Portsmouth boost as transfer target told he’s free to find new club

Portsmouth will be looking to improve their squad once the summer transfer window reopens next week.

The Blues did well to register a 16th-place finish in the Championship this season, but it’s accepted that new signings are needed if they want to progress.

Manager John Mousinho will likely be prioritising the capture of a centre-midfielder, given that loan stars Freddie Potts and Isaac Hayden have both returned to their parent clubs.

Pompey target told to find a new club

Pompey’s hunt for a midfield maestro might be boosted by news that Antony Evans appears to be out of favour at Huddersfield Town.

Mousinho had enquired about signing Evans last summer, when he was still at Bristol Rovers.

It’s not clear how far these enquiries went, but the 26-year-old opted to join the Terriers in a £450,000 deal.

However, Alan Nixon has reported that Evans has been told he can leave Huddersfield after just one year at the club.

It has been suggested that new manager Lee Grant doesn’t fancy the midfielder and is happy to sell him.

That could open the door for Portsmouth to make a cut-price bid to bring Evans to Fratton Park.

Mousinho should be trusted to build new and improved Pompey squad

It’s no secret that Pompey’s squad is weaker, having lost the likes of Potts and Hayden.

A Bristol Rovers reject might not sound like the perfect replacement for either of these young talents, and supporters won’t be throwing street parties if Evans is bought.

However, Mousinho has proven that he has an eye for a bargain.

If the manager thinks that Evans is the man to solve his midfield problems, the fans should trust his judgment.

No-one thought much of Potts or Hayden when they were brought to Fratton Park, but once given time to shine on the pitch, they quickly became fan favourites.

Portsmouth don’t have a huge transfer warchest to work with this summer, and Evans should be available on the cheap. So, who knows? Perhaps he could turn out to be Mousinho’s next miracle signing on a shoestring budget.
