Kusini Yengi offers parting words of advice to Portsmouth fans

Kusini Yengi has been through an eventful summer, to say the least.

Shortly after the end of the Championship season, it was announced that the Australian striker wouldn’t be getting offered a new contract at Fratton Park.

With his contract expiring on 30 June, Yengi had to say his goodbyes and begin his hunt for a new club.

But it didn’t take him long. Within a couple of weeks, Yengi agreed a deal with Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen.

Now, as he prepares to make his move to Scotland, he has offered some parting words of advice to the Portsmouth fans.

Yengi tells Pompey fans to keep faith with the team and manager

Yengi scored 13 goals during his two-year spell at Fratton Park, and became somewhat of a fan favourite during this time.

So, in an interview with BBC Radio Solent (11 June), he happily obliged when asked if he had any parting words for the Portsmouth supporters.

He said: “You’ve got an amazing club there and an amazing city. Keep sticking behind the team and supporting them, and the gaffer.

“The players next year are going to need that support to help take the club back to where they should be and where they were in the past. I’ll be following and supporting, and good luck for the future.”

Indeed, Portsmouth currently look set to be one of the underdogs in the Championship next season, and are commonly listed among the teams with the lowest budgets in the division.

The team’s form at Fratton Park, where they are backed by a vociferous crowd, was key to the team’s survival this year, and it will most likely the same next season.

Yengi deserves another shot at the big time

There was some debate among Portsmouth fans about whether Yengi deserved a fresh deal at Fratton Park.

The Aussie played an instrumental role in helping the Blues win promotion to the Championship as League One champions.

However, he struggled for form and fitness during this campaign and was unable to trouble the scoresheet in 14 appearances.

Yengi had argued that these fitness issues were the reason he wasn’t offered a deal, although others believe that the Championship might have been a step too far for him.

Either way, he will get the chance to prove himself with Aberdeen next season.

As well as competing against the likes of Rangers and Celtic, he will also get to show his skills on the European stage.

Aberdeen are guaranteed a place in either the Europa League or the Conference League, as a reward for winning this year’s Scottish Cup.
