Mousinho ‘could land Portsmouth millions’ amid talk coming out of Fratton Park

John Mousinho will be busy during this summer’s transfer window as Portsmouth look to strengthen their squad.

The Portsmouth manager did amazingly well to secure a 16th-place finish in this season’s Championship with a limited budget after being promoted from League One.

However, it’s widely agreed that he’ll need to bring in some more new faces to avoid a relegation dogfight next season.

While some fans aren’t impressed with the names being linked with Pompey so far this summer, they’re evidence of an intelligent transfer policy being used by the club.

Young players provide clear path forward for Portsmouth

There have been no new arrivals through the doors so far at Fratton Park, but media reports continue to link Portsmouth with younger players.

Assuming these reports are accurate, this strategy can be considered the best way forward for Portsmouth.

Mousinho was reported to be interested in Jonathan Tomkinson earlier this week, for example.

While many Pompey fans were unimpressed with the news, this would be a better move for Pompey (in the long-term at least) than signing someone like Joel Ward.

Yes, Ward is an experienced defender who’s proven himself at the highest level, but he’s 35 years old. There’s no sell-on value there.

Meanwhile, if Mousinho rates Tomkinson as good enough for Portsmouth, it’s likely he believes that they can eventually make a profit by selling him on.

Portsmouth need a sustainable path to progress

The signings of Australian duo Hayden Matthews and Thomas Waddingham are another example of this strategy at play.

Portsmouth spent a tidy sum on these two, but there’ll be belief that the club can eventually profit on them.

This blueprint means investing in potential, rather than splashing the big bucks on proven superstars.

It’s an intelligent long-term strategy, rather than a short-term ‘win or bust’ one.

Portsmouth’s record in the Championship this season

Fans might get underwhelmed when their team is continuously linked with all these so-called ‘nobodies’, but this is the only sustainable way that Portsmouth can establish themselves as a growing force in the Championship.

Thankfully, in Mousinho, they have a manager with a great eye for a young player who is quickly proving himself as an astute technician in the transfer market.

He might not attract any ‘big names’ this summer, but fans can be confident that Mousinho’s signings have what it takes to do a job at Fratton Park, and eventually land the club millions in sales.
