Portsmouth news round up: Potts replacement named, another ‘finished’ at Fratton Park

Portsmouth are set to have another busy summer ahead of their second season back in the Championship.

If John Mousinho wants to keep Pompey in the division, then it will be crucial to bring new signings to Fratton Park.

John Swift has been linked with a return to Portsmouth and could provide the spark in the final third that the South-Coast club need.

The 29-year-old is looking for a new side after recently being released by West Brom.

Here, Pompey News rounds up all the other big talking points from the past 24 hours.

Swift not the only familiar face who could return

Whilst Swift could be set for a potential reunion with Portsmouth, a Pompey icon could face his old club next season.

The sacking of Chris Wilder at Sheffield United is reportedly imminent, and Gary O’Neil is the strong favourite to take over at Bramall Lane.

O’Neil made 192 appearances as a player for Portsmouth before making a successful transition to becoming a manager.

Since being the manager of Bournemouth and Wolves, O’Neil has never faced Pompey in a managerial capacity, but that could be set to change next season.

Mousinho identifies potential Potts replacement

Freddie Potts was an integral part of Portsmouth’s success last season, but bringing the talented midfielder back to the club either on a loan or a permanent deal seems unlikely.

Mousinho is keen to bolster his midfield ahead of the new campaign, and Charlie Savage has been touted as a potential replacement for Potts.

Savage had a magnificent season for Reading in League One, registering five goals and nine assists.

Wales international Savage has been tipped by commentator Ian Darke to be a quality player that could be a good replacement for Potts.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Pompey News, Darke said: “[Savage] is very good at picking a pass. He can weight a pass, hit cross-field balls, he’s got good instincts. So it wouldn’t be the worst bit of business.

“It’s probably that he needs a bit of that grittier side of his dad’s personality just to make him more complete, but I think Mousinho does quite like him.

Paddy Lane could also be set for a Fratton Park exit

Alongside Potts, Lane could also be on the move from Portsmouth in the summer.

With reports linking the South Coast club to the talented Australian forward Adrian Segecic, Lane could find it hard to establish his place in the team next season.

Despite Segecic scoring 13 goals and registering two assists in the Australian A-League last campaign, certain fans have had their concerns about the potential signing.

Whether Segecic is signed or not, Pompey likely need to find a replacement for Lane, who has struggled to make an impact since playing in the second tier.
