Portsmouth ‘would be smart to sell’ player wanted by League One clubs

Portsmouth will have to be savvy in this summer’s transfer market.

The Fratton Park club have one of the smallest budgets in the Championship, but it’s widely agreed that new signings are needed if they want to avoid a relegation scrap next season.

They may therefore have to sell some players to make room for new additions.

For that reason, it could be smart to sell a player who is supposedly wanted by a couple of clubs in League One.

League One clubs ready to bid for Christian Saydee

Christian Saydee was on the fringes of the Portsmouth first team this season.

The Liberian forward made 30 appearances and scored three goals, but was generally used as a back-up to Colby Bishop.

It has been unclear what the future holds for Saydee at Portsmouth, although some fans suggested he saved his Portsmouth career with a goal in the last game of the Championship season.

An exclusive report from Football Insider (16 June) has revealed that Wigan Athletic and Plymouth Argyle are lining up bids for the striker.

And, given Portsmouth’s position as financial underdogs in the Championship, it might be smart to accept any significant bid that comes in for his services.

Portsmouth need to be savvy in the transfer market

Saydee has shown no evidence that he’s going to be a goal machine in the Championship.

Three goals in 30 appearances is hardly an exciting return, even if the majority of these appearances were as a substitute.

Many Portsmouth fans would agree that the Liberian can be categorised as a player who isn’t built for the step up to the second tier, much like fellow striker Kusini Yengi who was released this summer.

Saydee’s contract expires in 2026. All signs point to him leaving on a free transfer next year.

That’s unless Pompey can cash in now. The sale would leave Portsmouth light up front, but they must be savvy in the transfer market to establish themselves as a thriving Championship club.

That means selling players at the right time to attract the highest possible transfer fee. In the case of Saydee, that time is now.
