Adrian Segecic undergoes Portsmouth medical as announcement time revealed

Portsmouth are set to announce Adrian Segecic as their first summer signing.

Pompey have been toiling away behind the scenes to secure additions to John Mousinho’s squad, but have been unable to get a deal over the line as of yet, although that looks as if it is about to change with Segecic.

It emerged on Tuesday (17 June), that Segecic has decided to sign for Portsmouth, despite several European sides also having been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old.

The forward struck 18 goals in 36 appearances for Sydney FC last term, and looks like being the type of player who the Fratton Park faithful should be really excited about.

Segecic has completed a medical and will be announced tomorrow

John Mousinho has bedded several former A-League stars into his Pompey squad over the last few seasons. Thomas Waddingham is one man who has already shown plenty of promise, and it now looks as though Mousinho will have another emerging Australian star to work with in Segecic.

Portsmouth’s pursuit of the attacker has moved quickly in the last few days, and Segecic is now understood to have completed his medical with the club, according to Mark McMahon (17 June).

Pompey are expected to announce the signing of Segecic tomorrow (18 June), with the youngster due to become the club’s first addition of the summer transfer window.

Portsmouth may have unearthed a gem in Segecic

Portsmouth will know that they will need to bring in new faces if they are to survive the drop once again next term.

Mousinho oversaw a crucial upturn in form in the latter stages of the campaign that preserved their Championship status, however with Portsmouth’s budget constraints, their business must be shrewd if they are to improve again next term.

Their life will be made even harder by the fact that two of the newly-promoted teams from League One, Birmingham and Wrexham, are very well-backed and are expected to finish well clear of any impending relegation battle.

As a result, Pompey must be clever in the market if they are to survive. Their focus should be on trying to look for gems in relatively unexplored areas of the market, and they may have done that to great success with Segecic.

The 21-year-old’s time on the South Coast will probably live or die by his ability to adapt to the English game, but he does possess the type of goalscoring ability that Pompey have every right to get excited about.

If he can translate his success in Australia over to the EFL, then this could prove to be one of the signings of the summer in the Championship.
