Mousinho makes striking new admission on Portsmouth transfers as window reopens

John Mousinho has shared some new details on Portsmouth’s transfer policy for this summer.

The summer transfer window reopened on Monday (16 June) and will remain open until 1 September.

However, Mousinho’s admission about what’s likely to happen during this period might disappoint some of the Fratton faithful.

Portsmouth won’t be as busy as last summer, admits Mousinho

Last summer, Mousinho was busy building a squad that was capable of competing in the Championship. That transfer window saw the likes of Matt Ritchie, Nicolas Schmid and Josh Murphy drafted into Fratton Park.

Several loan signings were made, too, and the starting XI in Portsmouth’s first Championship game looked significantly different to the side that won League One in the previous campaign.

However, in an interview published on the official Pompey website (16 June), Mousinho admitted there will not be as many signings this summer.

He said: “It won’t be as busy as the past two summers, while also not just one or two – probably somewhere in between.”

Mousinho also addressed the fact that Portsmouth hadn’t recruited any new faces since the transfer window first opened on 1 June.

“There is still a lot of time before the window closes and in some cases, you want to keep your options open,” he said.

The only official business conducted at Fratton Park so far has involved new contracts offered to existing players.

The club have been linked with a handful of exciting midfielders, including the likes of John Swift and Isaac Price, but it would appear that no official bids have been made.

Mousinho should aim to replace departing loan stars at the very least

There will be no spending spree at Fratton Park this summer, but most Pompey fans would have been able to predict that already.

They can at least take some comfort in hearing that the club will be trying to bring in a few new faces.

Portsmouth have lost some key figures in their starting XI, due to their loan stars being sent back to their parent clubs.

If Mousinho can find suitable replacements for Freddie Potts, Isaac Hayden and Rob Atkinson, that should be regarded as a productive transfer window.

Remember that Portsmouth were flying at the back end of last season in the Championship.

They are seventh in the form table for this calendar year. The existing squad adapted to the demands of the Championship as this past season went on.

They will also have some top stars returning from injury in time for the first game of the 2025-26 season.

So, maybe a handful of quality additions is all that’s needed to continue Pompey’s rise up the Football League.
