‘Portsmouth to go for John Swift’ after major Segecic update
Portsmouth are making progress in their attempts to boost their squad ahead of the 2025-26 season, with a big update emerging on Adrian Segecic.
The Fratton Park club hadn’t made any new signings when the transfer window re-opened on Monday (16 June).
However, that looks set to change imminently.

Portsmouth ready to finalise Segecic transfer
Segecic has been linked with a move to Portsmouth among numerous other clubs in recent days.
The News reports (17 June) that the Australian playmaker, available on a free transfer, is now finalising a long-term deal at Fratton Park.
This would make him the fourth Aussie in the Pompey squad, alongside Thomas Waddingham, Hayden Matthews and Jacob Farrell.
Segecic is most comfortable playing in an attacking midfield role, and he scored 18 goals for Sydney FC from this position last season.
That’s a similar position to John Swift, another player who Portsmouth were supposedly targeting this summer.
However, it might remain a smart move for Portsmouth to go and get Swift as well.
The former West Bromwich Albion midfielder is also available on a free transfer and would remain a valuable asset to Portsmouth, even after Segecic signs his deal.

Swift would add experience to exciting Pompey side
Segecic was banging in goals for fun at Sydney FC, but there’s no guarantee that he’ll hit the ground running in the Championship.
There’s likely to be a learning curve for the 21-year-old.
Appearances | Minutes Played | Goals | Assists |

Even if Segecic starts like a house on fire, there could be some games that call for more experience and nous in Portsmouth’s midfield.
That’s where Swift would come in. He has racked up hundreds of Championship appearances with West Bromwich Albion and Reading. He knows what this division is about.
Swift knows what it takes to grind out a result against a high-budget team. He has a lot of knowledge to pass on to Portsmouth’s younger players.
Of course, there’s potentially room for Swift and Segecic to play together. The former could drop deeper into the midfield to play in more of a number 8 role.
It’s undeniably exciting to land the signature of Segecic. Those involved in the deal should be applauded once it’s completed.
But they should also go and get Swift next.
