A-League use Mick McCarthy to joke about latest Portsmouth transfer activity

Portsmouth’s transfer policy is becoming somewhat of a meme.

Since John Mousinho was appointed as manager, the South Coast club have signed five Australian players, and it’s not going unnoticed.

Following the recent signing of Adrian Segecic, attention has been thrust on this policy once again.

Australian A-League pokes fun at Portsmouth transfer policy

Segecic, Kusini Yengi, Jacob Farrell, Thomas Waddingham and Hayden Matthews are the five Aussies signed by Mousinho.

All five were signed from Australia’s top division, the Australian A-League.

Yengi has signed for Aberdeen after being released by Portsmouth, but the four remaining players are an exciting part of Portsmouth’s future.

The Australian A-League itself has even poked fun at Portsmouth’s reliance on players from Down Under in recent times.

Its official X account posted a meme featuring Mick McCarthy, while urging followers to “find someone who loves you like Pompey loves signing players from Australia.”

The meme features a reporter telling McCarthy that “It can’t go on like this.”

“It can!” he retorts.

Segecic has been snapped up early enough to enjoy a full pre-season with the Portsmouth squad, who will report back to the training ground on 23 June.

It’s a big season ahead for Portsmouth’s Australian quartet

There will be a lot of expectations surrounding Portsmouth’s Australian players next season.

They’re all still young, but Matthews, Waddingham and Farrell showed enough in their early appearances for Pompey to suggest they could make a great impact in the Championship.

This, in turn, will lead Pompey fans to believe that Segecic can adjust quickly to life in England as well.

It won’t be easy for any of these players to break into the first team. Pompey enjoyed an amazing run of form toward the end of last season while all their Aussies were injured, and the players involved in that run would rightly consider themselves ahead in the pecking order.

But opportunities will surely arise for Segecic, Farrell, Matthews and Waddingham, provided they can stay fit. It’s up to each of these young stars to take their chance when it arrives.
