John Swift transfer twist emerges at Portsmouth after contract developments

Portsmouth have been linked with a move for John Swift for most of the summer.

The West Bromwich Albion midfielder was involved in Portsmouth’s academy and is available on a free transfer, with his current contract expiring on 30 June.

Swift has attracted interest from overseas clubs, but is said to prefer a stay in England.

A move to Fratton Park, therefore, seemed like a perfect fit considering Portsmouth are on the lookout for new midfielders, but a fresh twist has now emerged.

Portsmouth not interested in Swift

Portsmouth look to have backed away from a possible reunion to bring Swift back to Fratton Park.

The News (22 June) suggests that John Mousinho and his recruitment team would prefer to look elsewhere in their bid to recruit new midfield stars.

There are several reasons why Mousinho might not be keen on the 29-year-old.

For starters, he recently completed the signing of Adrian Segecic, who plays in a similar number 10 role to Swift, as well as on the wing to add versatility.

Swift’s wage demands were always likely to be a stumbling block, and it has also been suggested that he doesn’t suit Mousinho’s high-energy pressing style of play.

Portsmouth fans will trust in Mousinho’s decision-making

There had been a degree of excitement among Portsmouth fans about Swift’s potential homecoming.

The midfielder has a ton of experience in the Championship and he can be a goal threat, although he only netted three times for West Brom last season.

Still, the consensus among supporters is that ‘Mousinho knows best’.

Several fans have reacted to the news of Portsmouth’s non-interest in Swift, with most placing their faith in the Pompey boss to make the right decision.

Mousinho has generally made winning calls in the transfer market throughout his time at the club, and fans will now hope that he can attract more suitable midfielders to Fratton Park, as he looks to replace Freddie Potts and Isaac Hayden.

The return of Alex Robertson is another potential deal that has supporters talking. The Aussie was on loan at Pompey during the 2023-24 season when the Blues won League One.

The wheels are really turning now at Fratton Park.
