Jordan Williams tipped to thrive after Portsmouth confirm new signing

Portsmouth fans will be hoping to see a lot more of Jordan Williams in the coming season.

The right-back was signed from Barnsley last summer and looked a solid addition to the squad, both in defence and on the ball.

However, a series of injury problems limited him to just 20 Championship appearances.

Despite these setbacks, manager John Mousinho has declared his faith in Williams, and the 25-year-old should be fit and ready for a full pre-season.

Williams tipped to thrive after Portsmouth sign Adrian Segecic

It has been suggested that the arrival of Adrian Segecic could create a new Portsmouth system that allows Williams to thrive.

Football analyst Jack Hancock, who has written several detailed analyses on Portsmouth under Mousinho, believes that Segecic will quickly lock down a place in Pompey’s starting lineup.

In his latest article on Medium (23 June), Hancock suggested Segecic is most likely to play on the right wing, considering Callum Lang’s fantastic output in the number 10 position.

The Australians’ tendency to drift infield from a wing position would require a right-back who is capable of aggressive overlapping.

That’s where Williams can step in. The former Barnsley man has the engine and is comfortable enough on the ball to consistently support this style of attack.

Pompey spoilt for choice at right-back as new season edges closer

It was expected that Williams would become the first-choice right-back when he was bought from Barnsley last summer.

Indeed, Williams performed admirably whenever he was available for selection, and it’s only his fitness record that would concern Mousinho.

Terry Devlin and Zak Swanson both filled in well when Williams was injured, and Mousinho would have no fear about calling upon either of them if needed.

Indeed, Hancock suggested Devlin could also potentially thrive behind Segecic, although he is yet to prove himself as much of an attacking threat. Devlin registered 35 appearances last season, although he was used in a variety of positions. His versatility will continue to be a bonus for Portsmouth.

As things stand, it would appear as if Portsmouth are well covered at right back, leaving Mousinho free to focus on improving other positions during this summer’s transfer window.
