Adrian Segecic risk emerges after new Portsmouth transfer agreement – Exclusive

Portsmouth have started their transfer window with a bang by securing the signing of Adrian Segecic on a free transfer.

Segecic was the joint-top goalscorer in the Australian A-League with Sydney FC, and he became the fourth Aussie in Pompey’s first-team squad.

The reaction among Portsmouth fans has been almost unanimously positive, although the 21-year-old has been dubbed a risk by some.

Segecic labelled a ‘risk’ by football finance expert

Football finance expert Dan Plumley believes there will always be a risk associated with signing players from Australia due to the lower quality of its football pyramid.

Speaking exclusively to Pompey News, he said: “There’s a relative amount of risk built into the player in terms of the difference between the A-League and the Championship. We know it’s a considerable gap. However, if it’s a free transfer, the cost side of things is mitigated to a degree.

“Getting ahead of the curve and getting a striker on board is a good move.

The risk, as we say, is: can that player cut it in the Championship? If he does contribute goals, you’ll look back at that in a few months and go ‘that was a good bit of business’.”

Portsmouth fans will be inspired by the early impact of other Australian signings

It’s no secret that the overall quality of the Australian A-League pales in comparison to the Championship.

However, Portsmouth fans won’t be too worried about that because they’ve witnessed the impact of previous Australian signings like Thomas Waddingham and Hayden Matthews.

These two had particularly bright starts to their Portsmouth careers before their seasons were cut short by nasty injuries.

Still, they’ve shown enough to suggest they can cut it in England’s second tier. So, there’s no reason why Segecic can’t do the same.

Segecic scored 18 goals for Sydney FC last season and was being tracked by several European teams. He chose Pompey for the opportunity to work under John Mousinho and alongside his fellow countrymen.

He’ll be given a chance to show that he’s a risk worth taking soon enough. Portsmouth fans will hope that he can repay Mousinho’s faith in goals throughout the upcoming season.
