Portsmouth splash out six-figure fee to bring top talent to Fratton Park

Portsmouth fans are likely to be growing more excited about the new Championship season by the day.

John Mousinho’s men registered a solid 16th-place finish last season. Since then, Pompey have made their first summer signing and have been linked with several more exciting players.

What’s more, the South Coast club have been handed a relatively easy start to the Championship season, so fans will be dreaming of some great results in their opening fixtures.

And a recent bit of transfer business will certainly help them to achieve those results.

Adrian Segecic’s transfer fee revealed

Adrian Segecic became Portsmouth’s first summer signing after agreeing a move from Sydney FC.

The Australian playmaker was the joint-top goalscorer in the A-League last season and was available on a free transfer as his Sydney FC contract was expiring. However, it appears Portsmouth did still have to pay a fee.

In an interview published on the club’s website, Sydney’s head of player management, Alex Baumjohann, said that the club generated more than £2.3million from the transfers of four players: Patrick Yazbek, Jake Girdwood-Reich, Hayden Matthews, and Adrian Segecic.

As the transfer fees for the other three players are well-known, it can be estimated that Pompey paid around £215,000 in compensation to sign Segecic.

Segecic will be given time to prove his worth

That six-figure fee isn’t a drop in the ocean to a club the size of Portsmouth, but those behind the scenes will be confident that Segecic can prove his value.

There’s a significant gap in quality between the Championship and the Australian A-League, but Pompey’s other signings have shown that it’s possible to make the step up.

There may be more pressure on Segecic, given his goalscoring record and the success of his Australian teammates. However, he seems to have a calm head on his shoulders and will likely be excited to get the chance to prove himself at this higher level.

It’s not clear how much money Portsmouth will have to spend on other summer signings. They have most recently been linked with a move for £2million-rated midfielder Pelle Mattsson, although no official bid has been made yet.
