Sheringham makes Redknapp point in verdict on Mousinho future at Portsmouth
Teddy Sheringham is fondly thought of among the Portsmouth fanbase.
While the former England international only played one season at Pompey, he made a great impression on the Fratton Park faithful.
At 38 years old, the striker netted 10 goals in all competitions to help keep Portsmouth in the Premier League.
With John Mousinho aiming to eventually return Pompey to the top flight, Sheringham has now weighed in on the South Coast club’s future.

Sheringham hopes Mousinho can repeat Redknapp promotion trick
It is no secret that Mousinho has been working wonders at Portsmouth.
The manager not only finally got Pompey out of League One, but he has now guided the South Coast club to a lower-mid-table finish in the Championship.
As a result, many sides have been interested in acquiring Mousinho, including West Brom.
Now, with the manager’s stock consistently on the rise, Sheringham believes that Portsmouth should be able to keep hold of the 39-year-old going forward, as he hopes he can repeat Redknapp’s promotion trick.
He told Racing Tipster (25 June): “Yeah, I think [Portsmouth can keep hold of Mousinho]. I think he’s done a good job stabilising the club. It’s a massive football club and one that they need to keep progressing.
“They’ve been used to football in the big time when I was there in the Premier League, and they want to get back up in the footballing world, up the tables and get back to where they once were.
“Harry Redknapp had a great way of managing and getting them back to the top level, and let’s hope John can do a similar job.”

Premier League football has to be the goal for Portsmouth
While it is unlikely to happen this season, promotion to the Premier League has to be the long-term goal at Portsmouth.
Sunderland and Ipswich Town proved in recent seasons that Championship clubs can still overcome the relegated sides to earn a place in the top-flight without spending massively.
John Mousinho’s record at Portsmouth | |
Games managed | 124 |
Wins | 55 |
Draws | 36 |
Losses | 33 |
Win percentage | 44.35 per cent |

Pompey’s modest budget may make this difficult. However, Mousinho has proven that he has a great eye for a bargain.
Portsmouth’s secret weapon is no doubt their recruitment, with the South Coast club rarely getting it wrong.
Hopefully this can prove to be a long-term success at Fratton Park and help guide Mousinho’s side back to the Premier League.
