Jacob Farrell can be ‘like new signing’ as Portsmouth injury update shared

Portsmouth were dealt a monumental blow last year as summer signing Jacob Farrell picked up a long-term injury after his debut.

Farrell arrived to much fanfare as he joined from the Australian side Central Coast Mariners, signing a long-term deal at Pompey.

However, he has not appeared for Portsmouth since his debut in a 0-0 draw with Sheffield United in September 2024, after picking up a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury which required surgery.

The 22-year-old missed the entire campaign as Pompey secured Championship survival, but he could have a big role to play next season.

Farrell spotted in Portsmouth training

Farrell suffered a brutal setback in his recovery in January, which kept him out of the entire season, but John Mousinho may hope to have him available again soon.

With Portsmouth returning to pre-season training away from Hilsea, Farrell has been spotted in the background doing off-ball drills, and his return to the grass is a very good sign.

The left-back will hope to continue his recovery and feature in pre-season to build his fitness up, in what would be a massive boost for Portsmouth.

Farrell was highly rated in Australia before his move to Portsmouth, and he could now have a huge impact on the squad for next season.

Farrell could be an internal solution at left-back

Portsmouth had to act in the market to replace Farrell after his injury, and signed Cohen Bramall in the January transfer window.

The 29-year-old made 12 appearances in the second half of the season, but Pompey did not keep him beyond the end of his contract, and he will now leave as a free agent.

Farrell could directly replace him as an option to compete with Connor Ogilvie for a starting spot, and if he can hit his best form, he will back himself to cement his place in the team.

The 22-year-old is an attacking full-back, and provided 20 goal and assist contributions in 90 games for the Central Coast Mariners before completing his move to Fratton Park.

After his absence last season, Portsmouth may consider Farrell to essentially be a new signing, given the potential for him to make a crucial impact on the team.
