‘Portsmouth to back away from Alex Robertson transfer’ as new development emerges

Portsmouth fans have been keen to see Alex Robertson return to Fratton Park this summer.

The midfielder starred in a loan spell on the South Coast back in the 2023/24 campaign, before injury cut short his stint with the Blues.

Robertson has since spoken about how much he enjoyed his time at Portsmouth, and that has prompted fans to dream of a potential reunion with John Mousinho following Cardiff’s relegation to the third tier.

Pompey have so far added just one signing to their ranks this summer, with Adrian Segecic becoming the latest man to swap Australia for England.

Robertson attracts interest from numerous Championship sides

For all the recent A-League incomings at Fratton Park, Robertson was the original Australian star for Pompey.

His outstanding loan spell has prompted plenty of suggestions that the Eisners should move back in for him permanently, but that seems unlikely following the latest development.

The 22-year-old is understood to be attracting the attention of numerous Championship clubs, according to The News (27 June).

Sides in Europe and the MLS are also believed to be keen on him, while the prospect of a return to Portsmouth is thought to be an appealing one for him.

Pompey will surely be keeping track of how Robertson’s situation unfolds, but they face the issue of finances if the door opens for the Cardiff man to leave on a permanent deal.

They typically have one of the Championship’s smaller budgets, and the concern will be that with countless clubs interested, the price will be driven up to a point where they become priced out.

Portsmouth should forget about Robertson

Portsmouth have now been linked with a move for Mark Kosznovszky as a possible addition to their midfield, and it could certainly be argued that they should now be focusing on other potential options (like the Hungarian) instead of Robertson.

Rather than becoming embroiled in a potential bidding war for their former star, they could be better served by spending that cash on upgrades elsewhere in the squad.

As impressive as Robertson was in PO4, Pompey must back their ability to go out and find their next star at a cut-price fee.

Cardiff’s demands are currently unclear, but if they are sensible and take advantage of the level of interest shown, then Portsmouth could potentially meet an asking price that would easily fund three or four new additions in other areas of the squad.

If that proves to be the case, then they would surely be better off pulling away from any possible move for Robertson and instead trying to raise the general level of the squad.
