Portsmouth fans love Fratton Park fixture announcement that’s been made

Portsmouth have been teasing their fans with the prospect of a pre-season friendly at Fratton Park for some time.

Senior figures at the club have said that a home fixture was on the cards if a suitable opponent could be found.

Now, that friendly has finally been announced, and fans seemingly couldn’t be happier.

Portsmouth will face PEC Zwolle in Fratton Park friendly

Pompey will take on Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle at Fratton Park on Saturday 2 August.

This will be their final pre-season friendly before the Championship season begins the following weekend on 9 August, when John Mousinho’s side travel to Oxford.

It will give fans their first opportunity to welcome new signings like Adrian Segecic to Fratton Park.

It will hopefully also allow Portsmouth to take on a tougher class of opposition before their competitive fixtures begin.

PEC Zwolle finished 10th in the Eredivisie last season.

While the opponents are hardly a ‘big name’, Portsmouth fans reacted positively to the news on social media.

Many were delighted to get the chance to cheer on their team at Fratton Park before the season begins.

One commented “Nice. Love to see it”, while another added: “Finally, something different.”

Dutch side should offer a decent test for Portsmouth

The quality of the opposition isn’t always a huge consideration when it comes to pre-season friendlies.

The priorities are match fitness and allowing new players to bed into the team.

Sometimes, these friendly matches are about generating money for local non-league sides. Although Pompey won’t be able to visit Bognor or Gosport Borough this summer, they will make their annual trip to Havant and Waterlooville.

Either way, it’s a nice opportunity for local fans to see their heroes at Fratton Park before the season starts.

Some fans don’t get the opportunity to watch the team very often because Fratton Park nearly always sells out.

Some aren’t able to take the young children because of the intense atmosphere during competitive matches. A home friendly at Fratton Park can be a big deal to these supporters.

It will also allow John Mousinho’s men to test themselves against a higher calibre of opposition before the season starts. The dress rehearsal for their Championship match against Oxford

All in all, this is a positive announcement from Pompey.
